Humans assign gender to God, so the first question to ask ourselves is who decided God was male? The second question is why?

Peter Wilkes
About This Quote

If we believe in a supreme being, it’s hard to believe that one gender is better than the other. It’s hard to believe that there are only two genders. After all, this is a world where men and women can be equal and have equal rights. It’s hard to believe that the world’s most powerful being fits into a strict gender role.

Thus, it makes sense to think that there must be another explanation for this problem. Perhaps humans decided God was male so people would worship the male gender more. Perhaps they decided God was male because they wanted God to have a penis.

Or maybe they decided God was male because men are the stronger sex and men should be able to have power over women. The truth is probably a combination of all three of these explanations, but no matter what reason we can come up with, it doesn’t explain why we assume that the first question has already been answered—who decided? Who decided that God was male?
